We will go through the 3 stages discussing how to operate the wheel, hand positions, body mechanics, and watering.
The design of this class is to develop the understanding you needed to make centered pots with even walls.
Many students take this class because they have always wanted to try ceramics. I try to teach the fundamentals which make it easy to imagine taking more classes when they get home from their vacation.
The feeling of turning spinning clay into something functional like a cup or bowl can be an almost magical and definitely therapeutic experience. It’s the kind of process that allows you to focus on being where you are without any other thoughts or distractions.
Not everyone keeps the pots they make.
But if students make something they really like, I can trim, add handles, and fire their pots. Firing fees range between five and twelve dollars and are based on the volume and quantity of pieces made in their group.
Shipping is usually done via USPS but I can also ship to international locations as well.
This is a really fun experience especially with friends or with family and it’s a great experience for couples.

Welcome and thank you for your interest in this class and in making ceramics! I love teaching this class because it gives me an opportunity to share one of my favorite things to do…making pots on the wheel. Through this experience I have learned a lot about the throwing process and especially how to translate some of the key ideas needed to make this an easy to do and fun experience for everyone! You don’t have to be artistic to take this class. It’s a little bit like construction in the beginning. Going through the class in 3 stages has really helped people to grow their confidence step by step as they build their first bowls and mugs. Making a pot on the wheel is an amazing life experience. A fun way to focus on just the present moment. It’s almost like a little bit of a meditation…Surprisingly relaxing. There is definitely a feeling of accomplishment after class. It’s one of those activities that is challenging like learning to ride a bike but without having to fall down. There is also something so rewarding as well…like when you move past can I do it to the mindset where you start to think…what should I make?! Even if your friends and partners have never had this on their radar…you should still definitely bring them with you! A super fun couples or group experience. Almost everyone ends up having an epic time and everyone ends up making something, usually, something pretty amazing. I’m looking forward to meeting you and making some cool pots…but even more…some great memories. With Aloha, David

I have been making pottery for over 35 years. I love teaching ceramics. It has been an awesome experience to share the basic skills of throwing pots on the wheel, one of my favorite things to do.
Again and again people take this class and fall in love with making pots. I often get letters from students who go home and take more classes.

Again and again people take this class and fall in love with making pots. I often get letters from students who go home and take more classes. Some even buy their own equipment and start their own studios. People who live here on island often sign up for our extended 6 week class. Seeing the impact of sharing has been a powerful motivator to continue sharing and improving my skills as a teacher and motivator.
I teach in multiple ways so that people can grasp the concepts through demonstration, verbal explanation, and by actual hands on experience. I try to preview key ideas and follow through with repetition, useful analogies, and lots of positive support.
I like theory and guidelines more than rules in general...so I like to share my ideas and then support people to integrate the information in a way that helps them understand the process and foundational theory to make something beautiful and functional. In some ways I feel like I am teaching body mechanics as much as ceramics.
I teach the classes in phases: centering, opening, and pulling. Each step builds towards the next. It also allows me to catch any mistakes a student might make before we progress to the next stage. The results have been amazing. Students often leave with so much excitement they forget things and I have been shipping out some really amazing finished art work all over the world.
I love pottery, especially teaching throwing on the wheel…perhaps the perfect distraction…and so much fun.

My journey with acupuncture and massage began after breaking my back during a surfing accident when I was 27.
I learned as much as I could during the recovery process which took years. Ultimately, inspired by the experience, and wanting to help others I went to school first for massage therapy and then Acupuncture.
